DJ or live band for your wedding? How to decide (and why you might not have to)

It's one of the most common questions when planning the party. The answer depends on your guests, the venue and the atmosphere you want — and often the best option is both.

A live band has an energy nothing else matches; a DJ can play any song you can think of. Both work, but not in the same way at every wedding.

1. The best of a live band

  • Live energy: guests gather round, sing and dance with the musicians.
  • A memorable moment: it looks beautiful in the photos and the film.
  • It reads the room: stretches a song when the floor is full or changes the pace.
  • Perfect for the ceremony and drinks: an acoustic duo or trio sets the mood without taking over.

2. The best of a DJ

  • Any song, in its original version: from the classics to the latest hits.
  • More variety for guests of every age.
  • Non-stop music for hours.
  • Less space and set-up, and usually a lower budget.

3. What to think about before deciding

  • Your guests. Do they love dancing to the hits, or do they enjoy live music?
  • The venue. A band needs a stage, power and sometimes a green room. Some venues have sound limiters.
  • Timings. Bands usually play in 45–60 minute sets, with breaks.
  • Budget. A band, with several musicians and a sound engineer, usually costs more than a DJ.

4. What works best: both

Many weddings get the best of both worlds:

  • Live music for the ceremony and drinks: strings, guitar or an acoustic duo.
  • A band to open the party, with one or two sets.
  • A DJ to take over until the end, with the songs everyone wants to dance to.

That way you get emotion, live music and a party without breaks.

5. How we help

We suggest the combination that suits your wedding, find the musicians and the DJ, and coordinate everything: timings, sound, the stage and the handover between them.
