Wedding DJ playlist: songs that fill the dance floor
A great party isn't about playing what's in the charts — it's about reading the room. Here are the dance-floor essentials and how to put the list together with your DJ.
The first few minutes of the party set the tone for the night. If the DJ connects with every generation, the dance floor fills up and stays full. Here are the songs that work at almost every wedding, moment by moment.
1. To open the dance floor
Songs that get everyone up, from grandparents to the youngest cousins:
- I Wanna Dance with Somebody — Whitney Houston.
- Dancing Queen — ABBA.
- September — Earth, Wind & Fire.
- Shut Up and Dance — Walk the Moon.
- Valerie — Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse.
2. The crowd-pleasers
- Mr. Brightside — The Killers.
- Sweet Caroline — Neil Diamond.
- Don’t Stop Me Now — Queen.
- Uptown Funk — Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars.
- Livin’ on a Prayer — Bon Jovi.
3. Late-night bangers
- Freed from Desire — Gala.
- Insomnia — Faithless.
- Yeah! — Usher.
- A block of 90s or 2000s hits, depending on your guests.
4. A Spanish touch, for a wedding in Spain
- Mi gran noche — Raphael, the Spanish wedding classic.
- Vivir mi vida — Marc Anthony.
- Bailando — Enrique Iglesias.
- A rumba or a flamenco-pop moment to surprise your guests.
5. To close the night
- One last song for everyone to sing together, arm in arm.
- A final slow dance, or your first-dance song again.
6. How to brief your DJ
- Must-plays and do-not-plays. Give your DJ a short list of songs that have to be played and another of the ones you don’t want to hear.
- You don’t need a 200-song playlist. A good DJ needs to know your style and your guests’, then read the room.
- Think about your guests. With several generations or guests from different countries, mix classics everyone knows.
- Key moments: the first dance, the entrance to dinner, the parent dances. Tell the DJ the order and timings.
- Venue limits: some venues have a sound limiter or a curfew; better to know in advance.
7. How we help
